JOHANNESBURG FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | My favourite family. Ever.

Johannesburg family photographer

Would you believe that this was the very first family I photographed back in 2011. I absolutely adore them for so many reasons – Mom is a pleasure to work with, and her two children completely and irrevocably found their way into my heart at their first session.

When we came into contact again towards the end of 2012, I couldn’t have been happier – they truly are one of my favourite ever families to photograph.

We decided to go to one of my all time favourite locations – Rietvlei Farm. It’s an absolutely stunning location to shoot at, with such a diversity of areas to shoot in – enough to keep any photographer happy!

JOHANNESBURG CHILD PHOTOGRAPHER | A letter to my daughter

Johannesburg child photographer

If you are my friend on facebook, you will see that every month, I post the most recent images of my little girl. If you follow my blog posts, you’ll know that she is fondly referred to as HRH (Her Royal Highness).  So I have decided to transfer some of these monthly images to the blog, along with a monthly letter to my daughter. I know I’m letting you peek into my life more so than normal. I know that you will see my emotions transcribed to words. I’m okay with that. I WANT to share this incredible little girl with you. She is my life. She is my heart. And now she is about to touch yours.

JOHANNESBURG CHILD PHOTOGRAPHER | Styin’ Sunday – All things girly

Johannesburg child photographer

Welcome to Stylin’ Sunday, where I will share with you what I think will look good for your photo shoot! Remember that these are only my own opinions – of course, our tastes will differ, but this is just a rough guideline to give you an idea of what colours complement each other and what styles look great in photos. Something important to take into consideration is the feel you are wanting to achieve in your images – are we going edgy and urban? Are you more the soft and romantic type? Or perhaps you would prefer something timeless and stylish. You can browse through my Pintrest Board where every edition of Stylin’ Sunday will be posted for you to draw inspiration from. Please pay attention to your choice of wardrobe for your photo shoot as well as your accessories; your outfits are extremely important. However, the most important thing is for you to be comfortable with what you are wearing as we want your outfit choices to reflect who you are – if you feel awkward on the day of your photo shoot, this will reflect in your images.

Still unsure about what you want to wear? Drop me an email at info@chriscrossphotography.co.za and I’ll gladly help you find something that will be perfect for you!

JOHANNESBURG FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | This is what family love is

Johannesburg family photographer

I cannnot stress enough how much I enjoy shooting (photographing!) family portraits. I especially enjoy being behind my camera capturing playful moments and sentimental moments between siblings, no matter what age they are.

I always think is it so special for a girl to have an older brother – someone to watch out for her, someone to protect her. This brother and sister are no exception. Even though they (generally) aren’t fond of hugging each other (cooties, right?!), he is so fiercely and lovingly protective of her that it is plain to anyone who is watching how strong their sibling bond is.

Once you have seen photos of Mom and Dad, you will see immediately where these beautiful two children get their good looks (and incredible blue eyes!) from.

This session was done at one of my all time favourite locations – Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort. The lighting there is sublime, as well as the endless little nooks to shoot in.

Aren’t they just a gorgeous family?

JOHANNESBURG CHILD PHOTOGRAPHER | My favourite photo. Ever.

favourite photo

Today, I’m going to show you my most favourite photo EVER of mine.

Okay, I am lying. I’m going to show you more than one. How am I supposed to narrow it down?!

Before I show you my favourite images, let’s take a quick look at what seperates a GOOD photograph from a GREAT photograph for me.

Use of lighting, composition, colour and focus. Now, as much as I hate to admit it, I don’t get all of these right every single time. In fact, I probably only have a hit ratio of about 40%, if that much. Granted, photography is about continually growing, striving, learning. But I am pretty hard on myself (my own worst critic) so if I don’t hit all 4 of those important points, I normally trash the image. Except….

JOHANNESBURG FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | Picture Perfect Family

nesburg family photographer

I love being a family photographer.

I love the dynamics that are at play, especially with younger children – they always make me work for the great shots, but boy, when the family is as good looking as this one is, it sure is worth it!

We decided on an early morning session (and by early, I mean early – 7am – eep!!)

I was totally amazed at how these two boys could be so well behaved and in such good moods at that time of the morning! We gathered at Emmarentia Dam (it is gorgeous there!) – such an amazing location to shoot at – your options there are endless. You might want a forest type look, fountains, flower gardens, the lake as a background, open fields – definitely one of my favourite all time locations.

I was so lucky to be able to photograph the grandparents too. I think it’s so important to have current photos of the grandparents in the family – they play such an important role in a child’s life. What you will see in the photos below is lots of character, lots of personality and so much love that is shared in this family – I adored being able to capture ALL of that!

JOHANNESBURG CHILD PHOTOGRAPHER | Blue eyed beauty

beautiful dreamy portrait

This young girl has the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen.

Not only was she polite, energetic and bubbly, she was an absolute pleasure to work with! Her mom and I had a great time chatting while we were scouting our location and I completely and utterly fell in love with her daughter – can you believe she is only ten years old?! She carries herself like a true lady.

JOHANNESBURG CHILD PHOTOGRAPHER | WEEKLY CHALLENGE – WEEK 23 – PARTY

pink lemonade birthday party

I have been itching to share my party photo’s with you for this week’s weekly challenge!

You might remember my husband and daughter share a birthday (see that post here). Well, at the end of October, we threw a pink lemonade themed party – EVERYTHING was colour co-ordinated to pink and yellow, right down to the food.

The party was hailed out halfway through so we didn’t get as many photo’s as I would have liked, but we got enough to remember this amazingly special day by!
