JOHANNESBURG PHOTOGRAPHER | Tickle Me Red

johannesburg photographer

I missed blogging. As in, felt like my day was incomplete each day that went past that I simply didn’t get the chance to sit down and share my thoughts and beautiful clients with you.

Thankfully, I know I am not alone in this craziness. The amazing women that I chat to on a weekly basis, the ones with whom I share a common blog them with every week, have been just as busy as I have. This week though, we are back to our group blogging, and this weeks theme is awesome – RED!

I love red. I love the boldness of it, the brightness of it and its ability to draw you in.

If you are my friend on facebook, you will see that every month, I post the most recent images of my little girl. If you follow my blog posts, you’ll know that she is fondly referred to as HRH (Her Royal Highness).  So I have decided to transfer some of these monthly images to the blog, along with a monthly letter to my daughter. I know I’m letting you peek into my life more so than normal. I know that you will see my emotions transcribed to words. I’m okay with that. I WANT to share this incredible little girl with you. She is my life. She is my heart. And now she is about to touch yours.

JOHANNESBURG PHOTOGRAPHER | A self portrait. Or three.

funky self portrait

Oooh, it’s Tuesday again! That means my blogging friends and I are blogging about the same topic. This week, it was a toss up between self portrait and faceless self portrait, so when you go through all the links at the bottom of each blog post – starting with mine – you are bound to see a variety of ideas (and you definitely need to go and take a look at each post – my blogger friends are gorgeous!)

JOHANNESBURG PHOTOGRAPHER | And these are a few of my favourite things {February & March 2013}

Golden Orb spider Gauteng

March was such an insanely hectic month for me, with a holiday, a family wedding that turned into a weekend getaway, a special friend visiting from overseas AND some incredible clients to boot – I am so incredibly blessed!

However, because of this, my blogging has fallen waaaay behind. From this week however, my regular Friday’s Featured Photog and Stylin’ Sunday’s will be back in full force, as well as catching up on all my beautiful clients blog posts :)

In the last week, my morning routine has changed drastically. My morning’s have gone from being woken up by my daughter poking my eyes/ears/cheeks at whatever time we decide to wake up, to waking up early (in case you were wondering, I am NOT a morning person, my husband will attest to that!) and getting my daughter ready for school (she just started school last week! Read about that here).

Right, back to this week’s post. We decided to delve into our handbags and take a look see at what we keep in there. My hubby (bless his socks) always complains that I carry everything except the kitchen sink. This isn’t ENTIRELY true 😉 I’m a mom, which means I do carry a fair amount though – something for every occasion!

JOHANNESBURG GLAMOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Visual interpretation of my favourite song

visual interpretation of my favourite song

It’s Tuesday again! That means I get to blog on a certain topic with other photographers from around the globe! This week’s theme is a visual interpretation of my favourite song.

Now, I had something specific in mind. I LOVE Slash. My all time favourite song of his is Starlight (and it’s a toss up between the acoustic and normal version! Oh, and Myles Kennedy?? *swoon*) So I had visions of something amazing to represent how much I love this song… like star trails, or something equally incredible.

And then, on the day I wanted to take my shot (yesterday), it stormed. Not only did it storm, but it hailed too. A good ol’ Joburg summer storm. I was totally despondent. There was no way I was going to get my starlight shot in now.

Then the most incredible thing happened. The rain stopped and the sun came out. The lighting was INCREDIBLE. It was soft, warm and completely mysterious. To top it off, we had a double rainbow. A DOUBLE RAINBOW!!! Magic, pure magic.

Of course, “Somewhere over the rainbow” popped into my head, but it’s not even on my top 10 list, so I dismissed that idea. Guess what was on my playlist at that moment?

The Script – Breakeven.

So with something specific in mind, I pulled on an evening gown, grabbed my camera equipment and climbed on the roof. Sans make up and hairstyle (!!) because I was so worried about losing the light! The clouds mingled with the warm light was amazing.

It is such a satisfying feeling to see what you imagined come to life. For this image, I specifically went for the “I’m falling to pieces” lyrics line in the chorus. It is truly an incredible song – right now in my top 5 favourites on my play list.

This really pushed me creatively and I learnt a couple of new photoshop tricks too 😀

Want to see my talented friend Ally’s visual interpretation of her favourite song?? You can see it here!

Thanks for looking – chat soon!

JOHANNESBURG PHOTOGRAPHER | Advice for my 20 year old self

my own advice

I’ve often thought that I should take my own advice. In fact, I still think that pretty often. So when we decided this week to blog about the advice we would give our twenty year old self, about a hundred different bits of advice came to mind in less than five seconds!! :)

I’ve narrowed it down though, to just a few pearls of wisdom that I wish I had known then (or at least adhered to, some of it being my mother’s sage advice!)

These are all photos that were taken when I was twenty – I enjoyed going through the old photos and remembering some really amazing times! Admittedly, it wasn’t too long ago (six years, to be precise) but it seems like a whole other lifetime now.
